For the first time, the successor to the Alfa Romeo 155 - the Alfa Romeo 156 - was presented in the fall of 1997. The design of the car was developed at the Alfa Romeo Style Center. The project for the creation of the machine was led by chief designer Walter De Silva. In addition to the corporate identity center, specialists from such design bureaus as ItalDesign, Bertone and Pininfarina worked on the development of the car. The appearance of the car is made in the traditions of the Italian manufacturer. However, some of the elements were really radical. A number of ideas embodied in the 156 are used in modern cars. In 1999, the car began to install the 2.0 Selespeed transmission, equipped with an electro-hydraulic gear shift system. On the basis of the 156th model, a sports station wagon was also created, which debuted at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show. In 2002, the car underwent a facelift. The changes were developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and the ItalDesign team. The exterior of the car remained intact, the designers corrected only the interior. In 2003, a few more cosmetic changes were made, during which the exterior of the Alfa Romeo 156 was slightly different. In 2005, the 159 model replaced the car.
